What is a Sitemap?

Types of Sitemaps
There are 2 most common sitemaps that most people use;
- XML: It is readable to only search engine bots.
- HTML: It is readable to both the search engine bots and users as well.
XML sitemaps are a good way to show Google the most important pages on your site. The updates can help you boost your ranking with more relevant content like blog posts or newer testimonials from customers and clients.
What is Google Search Console?
Google is a powerful tool for online marketing and optimization. Google offers the Search Console to help you track your website’s indexing status so that it can be seen by more people who are looking up specific topics or services on search engines like google. You use this site to submit sitemaps of all pages in order for Google to crawl your website quicker than they would. It speeds up their process of finding everything there is from submitted pages, images in search results all the way down to videos or products listed on an e-commerce site.
How to submit a sitemap to Google?
Simply, to begin with, all you need to have is a Google account.
Sign in or create an account
Head to Google Search Console login;
Select your website
Choose “Domain” and enter your domain address.
You are entered into the Google search console, after completing some steps;
If you have multiple websites added, select individuals to work with, with the help of the drop down menu in the top left corner.
In the menu bar on the left side, select “Sitemaps” from the Index.
I have an already uploaded sitemap, so the screen looks something like this;
Remove invalid/outdated sitemap
Open your existing sitemap and click on the three dots in the top right corner, and press remove sitemap.
Add new sitemap
Add a new sitemap and press submit.
Once submitted, this is what you’ll get, pree “Got it” and you are good to go.
Sitemaps are an essential part of your website and SEO strategy. You should have one to ensure that both Google crawls it faster, finds more pages on the site for indexing, indexes all those pages in a timely manner so you can rank well with them; they also make things easier when making changes because everything will be already indexed by search engines automatically. There is no requirement from Google Search Console about submitting sitemap but doing this helps speed up the crawl process which means getting better rankings sooner than later.
